  Cross Country Runs through Season
by Alex Schray
Staff Writer

There are many characteristics that make up a good athlete. One of the Cross Country coaches, Mr. Sienkiewicz, said that "having experience is a good foundation for success."

He also said, "If you can conquer mind over matter then you are set for sports and academics." Statistics show that cross country runners have a higher GPA than other athletes at Mount Vernon High School.

Of all the runners, so far this season, Assistant Coach Sienkiewicz says that James Lamm is the best on the boy's team and Brianna Neilson is the best runner on the girl's team. The runners are grouped in two different ways, first by their ability level, second is based on a particular need, or area of focus.

In addition to his strategy for meeting the individual needs for his athletes, Assistant Coach Sienkiewicz has other policies that he follows. He says that you should start out strict in the beginning of the season then lighten up as the season progresses. However, his most important policy is to support his athletes. "We're here to for you," he emphasized.
