"Wie denken sie ist Football wichtig fur die Schule?" That is what the German speaking journalist from the "Mount Vernon Voice" asked me at the game. Do you remember your first American Football game? I am a German exchange student so the game last Friday was my first one. We all know that the Majors lost the game, but that doesn't matter to me. I am going to try to explain the experiences I had from my point of view.
Last Friday night my host parents gave me a ride to the football game. I was shocked to see a full parking lot. After 10 minutes of trying to find a parking slot I paid the entry fee. That was totally new for me at school events. When I took a seat the teams came in and everybody stood up for the National Anthem.
In Germany most of the teams are club and house. Also there are some school teams. I used to play soccer for my school and when we played there were about 10-20 parents and the coach standing at the side and cheering. At the football game there were about 600 people.
It was remarkable to see all the people that played a role in the game. All the cheerleaders, the band and fans who support our team.
While watching the game it started to rain. In Germany, everybody would leave but in America it was the complete opposite. Nearly everybody stayed and was enthusiastic until the last snap. Every time the Majors had the ball near the end zone everybody stood up and cheered.
As Mrs. King said: "Never boo your team!" and that is exactly what I experienced. Even though the Majors didn't have any chance, everyone was having a good time. What I took from the whole experience of American Football is that the atmosphere is more important than winning or losing.
By the way: The question was: "How do you think Football is important for the school?"
