Every year thousands of college football coaches try and recruit the best players throughout the nation. Endless phone calls are made and countless letters are sent. This season, college coaches have been attending football games and focusing on players they want to have for next fall. Two Mount Vernon players have been on the receiving end of the focus: Kyle Ricks and Zach Quigley.
If you've ever been to a Mount Vernon Football game then you have seen the sea of burgundy jerseys running out of the locker room and onto the field. You have probably also noticed that these guys are pretty big, but that there is one player who towers over everyone else. This Player is Zach Quigley.
Standing at 6'6" and weighing 325 pounds, Quigley is "Massive" according to quarterback Andrew Sable. "Our whole line is massive," he added, referring to the starting offensive line that consists of Josh Edmonds, Chris Crockett, and James Greer who together average 6'4" and 270 pounds. The massive line however is anchored by Quigley, which may be the reason scouts and coaches from James Madison have expressed interest.
Despite only eighty-four rushing yards in a loss to West Potomac, Quigley silenced his critics by paving the way for 168 yards on the ground in a 23-20 week one win over T.C. Williams. And even though Mount Vernon couldn't muster much of a rushing attack versus West Potomac, they still found a way to get into the end zone on a 22 yard rush by Theo Gee running, of course, behind the lead of Zach Quigley.
Another player college coaches have on their radar is star player Kyle Ricks. He ran for 94 yards and a touchdown in a win over T.C. Williams, but most people including linebacker Edward Apomasu insist Ricks is better on defense. "Kyle is better at defense" Edward said, adding, "He is no doubt the best defensive player we have."
Digitalsports.com, which covered the West Potomac- Mount Vernon game, is full of Ricks highlight tackles including a sack on West Potomac quarterback Cole Walter. Mount Vernon football will miss not only Kyle for his play, but for the intensity he brings to the game also. "Kyle is crazy, just on kickoffs he's yelling and getting everyone pumped," Defensive lineman Juan Fortiz said.
There is no doubt both of these players will be vital this season in order for Mount Vernon to have any success. The future of these young stars is dependent on how they do now. Everyone at Mount Vernon knows they're good, college coaches know they're good, and if you don't believe them, then ask their opponents.
