As of the start of the new school year, flat studded belts, which were formerly deemed a violation of the school's dress code are now "legal" to wear in school.
Mrs. King, has allowed students to wear these belts for a number of reasons. The old reasoning for not having the belts was that they could be used as a weapon, but Mount Vernon disciplinary records show that they have never been used for that purpose.
According to Mrs. King, "It's almost like we were fighting a losing battle. Everyone has those belts. Now I'm taking a belt away from somebody and their pants are hanging down and now I have to discipline them because their pants are hanging down. Everyone has those belts!"
While flat studded belts are allowed, wearing belts with protruding studs or other metal fixtures, such as bullets, is still a violation of the dress code.
