Entertain an Education

I find it ironic and slightly disturbing that athletes get paid so much money to support their expensive, sweet and flashy way of life and yet they are not necessary. People are so quick to pay so much money to be entertained. I am fully aware of the fact that people idolize many athletes. We all also love to watch TV, listen to iPods, and play video games; however that is not crucial to life. We are all extremely confused about what it is that brings us success just like our favorite sports stars. But me, I actually look up to teachers. Yes teachers, you know those people that we need to get and education from! Unfortunately, they do not have that same luxurious lifestyle, but why?

Teachers don't and probably won't ever have the same lavish standard of living and high pay like athletes. It is all about supply and demand. The crazy fact is the average individual would rather spend more money on being entertained than getting an education. Just think about it; think about how much you spend on textbooks versus how much you spend on sport jerseys, camera's, iPods, etc. A high school book for an English class is no more than $15 but a football jersey starts at about $80 and can get up to $150. Christmas is on its way and teens are asking for sports apparel, Nintendo Wii's or a new digital camera, but do you hear anyone asking for a new Algebra textbook for Christmas? Of course you don't.

Recap of What We've Done So Far
By Sara Phersayaphai
Staff Writer

As we say goodbye to the year 2008 and say hello to the year 2009, we as a school have reached the half mark of the school year. We have already faced challenges and overcame many obstacles.

In September when we first started school students were faced with the new policies; the Debt Policy and the new Major Time Policy. With the Debt Policy students had to pay any fines they had before participating in any extracurricular activities. With the Major Time Policy students were not allowed to travel on Fridays and were allowed to travel twice on Tuesdays and Thursdays. These two policies caused a lot of controversy. But once we got towards November our school's debt has lowered and more students started to turn in their fines. Also students have gotten used to the new major time policy and went along with it...

  Christmas Spirit Gone Wrong?
By Clarissa Rivera
Staff Writer

Christmas spirit is defined as a time of peace, love, and goodwill to all. It is a time where most people celebrate the thought of giving and getting. But sadly it seems that people nowadays are selfish and only think about Christmas as a time to shop and desire for materialized things.

To me, the famous holiday has definitely become more of a commercialized holiday. It also seems that the religious concept of the holiday is not playing a big part in Christmas as it was years ago. Nowadays, Christmas spirit is defined as a time to get the best deals on your favorite electronic appliances, or over-decorating your home so you're the brightest house on the block, or even who can get the other the most extravagant present. I hate to be pessimistic, but I really don't think that Christmas brings the best in us. Kids whine to get what they want and whine when they don't get it. People argue and fight to get the new “hot toy” of the year at the toy store. It's turned out to be all about the presents and no longer about family and giving...

Birth Control Brings Controversy

By Brea Thompson
Staff Writer

Last year, King Middle School in Portland, Maine became the first school in their state to offer prescription birth control pills to girls in grades 7 and 8. According to NPR.org, girls in seventh and eighth grade are able to obtain these pills as long as they have parental permission. Should it be the school's duty to supply students with these tablets or is it the parent's responsibility?

When it comes to the topic of the birds and bees, most kids of my generation think they know their fair share, however, there are still some who don't quite understand it. So who should be there to inform kids about sex, pills, diseases, etc?...
